The Adamawa State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Petitions, Public Service and Electoral Matters has called for recruitment of new staff to fill positions left by staff who retired from the local government councils.
Chairman of the committee and member representing Guyuk Constituency, Adwawa Dongolok alongside other members, made the call during a familiarisation visit on the Local Government Service Commission on Tuesday.
The committee also directed the Commission to compile the list of vacancies created as a result of the retirement or death and seek approval for the recruitment of new staff to fill in the vacant positions.
According to the Chairman, the local government councils are now financially autonomous and can recruit new staff, and urged the Commission to do everything possible towards creating job opportunities for their constituents.
Dongolok commended the Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri administration for giving the local government councils their full powers to operate as third tier of government without interference.
Speaking while receiving the Chairman and Members of the House Committee, the Chairman of the Commission, Dr Pitton Power stated that hundreds of staff have retired from service as a result of which vacant positions were created.
Dr Power told the members that he signs the retirement letters of the staff on daily basis, and that currently the Commission is in dire need of new staff to cover vacancies created as well as promotion of serving staff.
The Committee had also visited the Adamawa State Civil Service Commission where the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Anthony Emmanuel said that lack of employment in the state civil service is affecting its operations.
The Chairman of the committee Adwawa Dongolok urged the management of the Commission to be transparent in whatever they do and adhere strictly to due process in the conduct of government business.
